About The Club

Ever fancied racing a radio controlled Stock Car or Banger?
Well the Hathern Radio Controlled Stock Car Club could be for you.
The Hathern Club has been racing Stock Cars for over 10 years.
Meetings take place once a fortnight, between September and May, on a Tuesday evening at the Hathern Village Hall.
The club is very proud of its warm welcoming atmosphere, with both young and old enjoying the fun, competitive and yet friendly Stock Car and Banger racing.
With most members being full size Stock Car fans, the conversations between racing is never dull.
The Club also has many of the best drivers from around the country, who are always willing to help new and young racers, with problems and tips on how to setup their cars and improve their racing.
Stock Cars
The 1/12th Scale electric powered model replica’s of modern F1 Stock cars are the main racing within the club.
These cars are made so that any part can be changed quite quickly, are very cheap to maintain ( the most expensive part being the chassis and the motor – both are approx £8 each ), as you can see it is one of the cheapest formula’s of radio controlled racing.
The rules are controlled by the BRCA, where it has been decided that only one type of motor and mechanical speed controllers must be used, thus keeping the cost down further. Power is supplied by any 7.2V battery pack, with many drivers still successful with older and lower capacity cells, rather than the newer and more expensive cells.
Racing
This is full contact racing, using skill, robust construction and very good reliability to provide close and exciting racing.
Cars are arranged into heats with a mixture of different roof grades and usually no more than 6 cars per heat.
Each race is usually of 5 minutes duration, and each racer can expect to have 3 heats each night.
The best 2 laps scores from your heats count for your qualifying position in the finals.
Each racer will have a 5 minute final, so whatever your ability you will be racing against others who have qualified close to you.
Drivers are graded as per full size Stock Cars (White, Yellow, Blue, Red and Super Star), with grading changes every 4 meetings.
Bangers
These are a fun format, with 2 races per meeting. With a good rivalry and helpful opponents, racing is always a good spectacle.
They are based on the standard Mardave V12 hotrod, with Saloon car bodyshells (ie:- Rover P5, Granada Estates, Jaguar’s etc…)
Racing is full contact, but with no marshalling…. So as long as its running you’ve got a chance.
The cars are very strong and durable, with most racers being able to run their cars for several weeks without repair !!!
Each race is usually 5 minutes, in a clockwise direction, but it has not been unknown for the occasional head on crash !!!!
Sometimes a Destruction Derby will be run, with the last car running taking the victory.
The Track
This is a small-carpeted, “Coffin”-shaped oval, with the inner and outer track made from wooden planking.
Lap counting is done with our new AMB lap counting system.
Special Meetings
Over the year the club host several special race nights, some as memorial meetings to former racers, and others as a fun night.
We also host a round of the National Championship, which is attended by drivers from all over the country.
Spares
These are available at onsite shop every race night, where you can purchase spares or even a new car. There is also a tuck shop selling pop, tea/coffee and chocolate to keep the hungry racers fuelled.

TURBO stands for Thurrock Union of Radio Bangers Organization.   The club was founded in January 2003, by the current committee members, Gill Goldstone (admin & race control), Kerry Goldstone (scrutineer & track supervisor), Richard Whitting (scrutineer & track supervisor), and Wendy Anderson (club supervisor & treasurer).   In 2006 we also enlisted the talents of our current scrutineer Les Saunders, and our raffle organiser Marianne Saunders.

We launched the club on 22nd March 2003, and had 12 bangers attend our first meeting!   Since then the club has grown from strength to strength, with an average of 30-35 bangers per meeting.   In 2006 we had 40 fully paid up members to the club!

We have always tried to remain firm but fair.   The club rules are always posted around the walls at each meeting, and we do ask that everyone, members and visitors alike, read and adhere to them.

Roof grades are upgraded bi-monthly, at the end of February, April, June, August, October, and December.   Grades start at WHITE for the novice, upgrading to YELLOW, then BLUE, then RED.   Once a driver has achieved a red roof grade, they may never again be graded below yellow.   The only other roof grades accepted are title grades, such as WORLD CHAMPION which is GOLD; and POINTS CHAMPION which is SILVER.   Our current points leader will carry twin silver stripes.

A monthly newsletter is given free to each club member, keeping them up to date with current points positions and roof grades, as well as any current news, and meetings reports.

Thank you for taking the time to read this page, however, we feel, the best way to learn about TURBO is to check out the fixtures page and pay us a visit!   It costs nothing to come and view, and we firmly believe you'll not have a night to remember!
